Revolutionary Rhodes - Our first UK commercial project
A Baufritz timber construction is immensely flexible. With more than 100 years experience of building with timber we apply our exemplary design and build ethos to all our buildings. Our latest project, Rhodes South, the UK’s first carbon positive restaurant, is no exception. Headed up by celebrity and Michelin Star chef Gary Rhodes, this fine dining restaurant reflects a shared vision of beauty, attention to detail and extraordinary quality.
Rhodes South is located in the magnificent grounds of the newly refurbished Christchurch Harbour Hotel in Dorset with wonderful views looking out over Mudeford estuary. The contemporary design was inspired by our award winning showroom in Germany, The HausSchneiderei, and its natural finish blends in beautifully with the local scenery to create a sensitive yet striking vista.
Rhodes South offers clients British cuisine with a French influence with an emphasis on locally sourced produce. The menu also reflects the waterside position with many fish and crustacean dishes on the menu.
About Rhodes South – the building:
- Rhodes South is carbon positive* to the extent that the building materials that make up the structure store around 100 tonnes of carbon more than was emitted during manufacture and construction. It is estimated that this building will take 100 years before it becomes carbon neutral if heated with a form of fossil fuel such as gas.
- It was built in a super efficient factory in Germany and constructed on site in just a few days by a German workforce
- It is toxin free – no chemicals are used in the construction – all glues, paints, sealants etc. are made from organic materials
- It is biodegradable - made from 100% natural materials from sustainable resources. The 40cm thick timber walls packed with Baufritz’s own patented, organically treated wood shaving insulation mean that this building exceeds current building regulation standards for thermal performance by around 70%
- Healthy internal living environment constructed entirely from natural materials and a constant supply of fresh filtered air.
